SafeGuardian VS Code Extension — Architecture
How it fits together
Developer saves/stages a file in VS Code
            ↓
    VS Code Extension (TypeScript)
            ↓
    Calls SafeGuardian scanner engine
    (bundled inside the extension)
            ↓
    ┌─────────────────────────────────┐
    │  Results surface in 3 places:  │
    │                                 │
    │  1. Inline squiggles (Problems) │
    │  2. Status bar warning          │
    │  3. Notification popup          │
    └─────────────────────────────────┘
Trigger Points
Event	What happens
File saved (onDidSaveTextDocument)	Scan that single file immediately
git add detected (file watcher on .git/index)	Scan all newly staged files
Command palette: SafeGuardian: Scan Now	Full scan of staged files
Command palette: SafeGuardian: Fix	Run --fix logic
VS Code can't directly intercept git add as a command, but it can watch .git/index — that file changes every time you stage something. So the extension watches that file and triggers a scan when it changes.

│   ├── extension.ts          ← entry point, registers all hooks

│   ├── notifications.ts      ← popup alerts for HIGH risk
│   └── fixProvider.ts        ← CodeAction provider (the lightbulb fixes)
│
├── engine/ ← same scanner engine from SafeGuardian CLI
│   ├── ruleProcessor.js      ← reused as-is
│   ├── fileScanner.js
│   ├── regexEngine.js

└── rules/                    ← same JSON rules

The engine is reused directly — no rewrite needed. The extension is just a VS Code UI layer on top.

What the user sees
1. Inline squiggles (like ESLint)

const API_KEY = "sk-proj-abc123..."
                 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
                 🔐 SafeGuardian: OpenAI API Key detected [HIGH]
2. Status bar (bottom of VS Code)
🛡️ SafeGuardian  🔴 2 secrets  |  🟡 1 warning
Click it → opens Problems panel filtered to SafeGuardian issues.
3. Notification popup on stage
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ 🛡️ SafeGuardian — HIGH RISK                 │
│ 2 secrets detected in staged files.         │
│                                             │
│  [View Issues]  [Run --fix]  [Dismiss]      │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────┘
4. Lightbulb quick-fix (CodeAction) When cursor is on a flagged line:
💡 Add this file to .gitignore
💡 Unstage this file
Distribution
Published to VS Code Marketplace (free, one-click install)
Works on Windows, Mac, Linux
No account, no cloud, no telemetry
Auto-updates via marketplace
Key VS Code APIs used
API	Purpose
vscode.languages.createDiagnosticCollection	Inline squiggles in editor
vscode.workspace.onDidSaveTextDocument	Trigger scan on save
vscode.workspace.createFileSystemWatcher	Watch .git/index for staging
vscode.window.showWarningMessage	Popup notifications
vscode.languages.registerCodeActionsProvider	Lightbulb quick-fixes
vscode.window.createStatusBarItem	Bottom bar risk indicator
vscode.commands.registerCommand	Palette commands (Scan, Fix)
Summary
The CLI engine stays untouched. The extension is purely a VS Code UI wrapper that:
Watches for saves and staging events
Feeds files through the existing scanner
Surfaces results as native VS Code diagnostics, notifications, and quick-fixes
